costume breakdown

starting from the head and working our way downwards, this guide will go through each and every piece of the costumes seen in “a clockwork orange.”

individual items:

  • hat
  • eye lashes
  • mask
  • shirt
  • suspenders
  • belt
  • cod piece
  • pants
  • boots
  • cane

  • eye lashes
  • alex’s fake eye lashes adorn the top and bottom of his right eye. i recommend cutting every other eye lash of the style 45 mod pair in black by andrea. i also recommend attaching the eye lashes directly to your skin as opposed to your eye lids.

  • mask, maskie
  • the most difficult costume piece to acquire can also be seen as the most fun. i recommend using sculpey sculpting clay to create your own maskie, then use a few quick bursts of spray paint to give it some color. once shaped, be sure to hollow out the inside to reduce the weight. then pick up a leather blindfold, cut out holes for your eyes and attach the maskie to the blindfold.
  • sculpey sculpting clay, 1 lb box
  • red spray paint
  • black leather blindfold
  • shirt
  • while each of the characters wear slightly different shirts, we can notice a few things they share in common: first of all, they are all fairly well-fitting, secondly, they are tucked in, and finally they are not stark white. for alex’s shirt in particular we can notice two defining factors, the eye balls adorning the sleeves and the missing collar on what looks like an oxford shirt. while the eye balls will be covered in the next section, in order to achieve the collar-less look, i recommend flipping your collar inside-out and using double sided tape to tape it to itself within your shirt.
  • white thermal shirt
  • white oxford shirt
  • eyeballs
  • while i’ve seen quite a few people forgo the eyeballs completely, it is possible to include them without permanently ruining your shirt. first you will need red felt to recreate the “blood” stains around the eye balls. cut the red felt as desired, and then attach them to candy eyeball rings. cut some elastic and tie it through the eyeball ring to create somewhat of a bracelet. instead of gluing anything to your shirt or painting on it, you can wear these over your shirt.
  • red felt
  • eyeball lollipop rings
  • white elastic band
  • suspenders
  • depending on the pants you use, the suspenders may become as functional as they are fashionable. i recommend the solid white leather suspenders with a “y” type back. y refers to the suspenders joining together in the back and forming one strap. on the other hand, an “x” type back crosses over and has two straps in the back.
  • white adjustable suspenders
  • white leather suspenders with “y” type back
  • cod piece
  • the second most difficult accessory to recreate, especially on a college student budget. i’ve once again witnessed a number of creative recreations of this accessory, but through my determination to find something simpler and less expensive, i went with a standard jock strap and cup as a base, and i cut an older pair of thermal underwear pants to go over the jock strap.
  • jock strap and cup
  • white thermal underwear pants
  • pants
  • i’m using a pair of 5 pocket light weight white pants from the gap. unfortunately i cannot seem to find those on the gap website, therefore i would also recommend chef’s pants.
  • white chef’s pants
  • boots
  • the boots used in the film are called paratrooper boots. while they look awesome, i would have very little use for them besides on halloween. i decided to go with the black jungle weight combat boots. upon receiving these boots, i immediately noticed they have a weird warehouse smell to them. on the other hand, they fit great, they aren’t too heavy, and the smell went away after leaving them outside for a few days.
  • black combat boots
  • cane, sword cane
  • alex carries a sword cane throughout the film, without getting arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. i do not recommend carrying a sword cane, unless you remove the sword and use super glue to permanently reattach the top to the base.
  • black plastic cane
  • black sword cane
  • super glue

welcome to my blog

after watching “a clockwork orange,” i immediately knew it would be the inspiration needed for my halloween participation. while researching the larger story within the story, i stumbled upon a glossary of terms, and soundtrack information, but could only find one guide to building the “alex” costume. while the guide is a great resource, it is a bit outdated, therefore i hope this will serve as a more contemporary guide to creating the costumes seen in “a clockwork orange” by stanley kubrick.
